About Dental Bonds and Contour

Dental bonding and contouring is a less invasive way to improve small flaws, like a tooth’s size, shape, or spacing, than a dental veneer. Dental bonding and contouring is a technique in which a tooth-colored, putty-like material is carefully applied to improve the appearance of a tooth. It’s a more conservative alternative to placing a dental crown or veneer and also a quicker process. While it will not provide the structural support of a dental crown or fully encapsulate the tooth like a veneer, dental bonding and contouring can conceal minor flaws. Dr. Susan Fredericks, a respected Woodland Hills, CA cosmetic and general dentist, performs dental bonding and contouring at her practice near Calabasas. Bonding and contouring is a quick procedure that does not require any special recovery time. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Fredericks at Southern Cal Smiles if you would like to:

  • Conceal a crooked or misshapen tooth
  • Cover up stains or discoloration
  • Fill in small spaces between the teeth
  • Lengthen a short tooth
  • Mask small chips or cracks

What to Expect

Dental bonding and contouring is usually fast and painless for most patients, so it can be performed in our Woodland Hills office with little or no anesthesia. To prepare the tooth for proper bonding, Dr. Fredericks will etch the top layer of the tooth and then apply a conditioning gel. Before it is applied, the resin itself is matched to your natural tooth color and carefully painted onto the enamel. A special light is used to harden and cure the resin until it fully covers the treatment area. Once the resin is set, Dr. Fredericks can polish and buff the surface of the tooth to make the bonded teeth smooth and even. The natural teeth can also be polished and contoured with special dental instruments to remove sharp edges and even out the tops of your teeth.

Treatment Aftercare

You may find that your newly bonded and contoured teeth feel a little weird at first, but you will gradually become accustomed to the new shape and feeling. To prolong the lift of dental bonding, you should schedule regular dental visits at Southern Cal Smiles for cleanings and exams, and maintain a good home care routine with brushing and flossing. After bonding and contouring treatments, you should avoid staining food and drinks, as well as smoking and wear on the teeth. With good care, bonding and contouring can last 3 – 10 years before another treatment may be needed to maintain results.

Insurance Coverage

If dental bonding and contouring is needed to fix a tooth, dental insurance may cover some of the cost. If the procedure is only of cosmetic improvements, insurance will typically not cover the cost. Based on your needs, our office will determine what your dental insurance will cover and what will be charged to you directly. Southern Cal Smiles offers many payment and financing options to make dental bonding and contouring affordable for our Woodland Hills and Calabasas patients.
