About Digital X-rays

There's a lot going on behind the surface of your teeth and gums that can affect your overall oral health. At Southern Cal Smiles serving patients in Woodland Hills, Calabasas, and the surrounding areas, digital x-rays help board-certified dentist Dr. Susan Fredericks learn more about what is going on beneath your teeth and gums. They enable her to detect things like abscesses, cysts, bone loss, as well as benign or malignant tumors that cannot be identified during a regular examination. Digital x-rays expose you to significantly less radiation (up to 90%) than traditional x-rays. The digital images are also immediately processed and available to view in our treatment rooms, so Dr. Fredericks and her team can go over the results with you quickly and conveniently during your dental exam. Any areas of concern can be discussed along with treatment options, so your unique plan can be developed and scheduled.

What to Expect

After your teeth are cleaned and polished, we will take you to the room dedicated to our radiographs. Getting digital x-rays at Southern Cal Smiles is simple and fast. Even our youngest patients know that getting x-rays with us is nothing to worry about during their appointments. The entire x-ray session usually takes about 5 – 10 minutes. Once the needed images are taken, the x-rays are uploaded and can be examined during your appointment in a matter of moments.

Most patients will have a series of digital x-rays taken, including:

  • Panoramic view of the entire mouth — all teeth, the jaws, and sinuses
  • Periapical views to show the entire length of a tooth
  • Bite-wing images of the lower and upper back teeth
  • Occlusal view (images of the bite), if needed

Other Considerations

We still protect our patients from radiation exposure even though the digital x-ray produces much less radiation than the traditional film x-rays of the past. Our patients are asked to wear a lead apron as an added precaution. Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding should tell a team member so extra care can be taken. We want to protect all of our patients from radiation exposure, no matter how small.

Anticipated Costs

Many dental insurance plans cover your digital x-rays as a part of preventative dentistry. Keep in mind that digital x-rays at our office vary in price and can range from $25 – $150 for one image, or around $250 and up for a full-mouth series. Our front office can contact your insurance company to determine any out-of-pocket costs.
