About Root Canal Therapy
Dental pulp is soft tissue inside your teeth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. If this pulp becomes infected, it needs to be removed in a procedure called a root canal. Our general and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Susan Fredericks of Southern Cal Smiles, treats patients in Woodland Hills and Calabasas who need a root canal with a stress-free experience. Root canals have had a nasty reputation in the past, but today, under the care of Dr. Fredericks and her team, root canal therapy can be free of pain and complications. During a root canal, the infected dental pulp is removed from the inside the tooth. Dr. Fredericks will disinfect the tooth and remove all debris, then fill the tooth’s canal to prevent further pain or infection. If you are concerned about an infection in your tooth, schedule a consultation with Dr. Fredericks at her office in Woodland Hills, CA.
"If you want a personal dentist with a professional office personnel and the highest quality of care this is the place!! I have had dental nightmares in the past and it took me a while (even with insurance) to walk in an office. Dr. Susan STANDS BEHIND HER WORK, and the receptionist ALWAYS sends reminders including an email with a calendar interface for my Samsung phone. Accommodating schedules too!!! Open some Saturdays and late Wednesday night. As a person who travels for business...this is a HUGE plus! Higeinists are all caring (yes...learned the proper way to floss-yes THAT is a thing)...As long as I am in this area I will stick with this office of great people! Don't hesitate, just make an appointment!"- J.M. / Yelp / Jan 16, 2019

"Dr. Susan and her team went above and beyond the call of duty. I've had the best dental experience of my life! Dr. Susan is an incredible human being, too, in addition to her expertise. She called me at home after my treatment to hear how I was doing, and even sent me a Happy Birthday email. They are so detail-oriented, even down to playing the best background music for the patient's comfort, exceptionally friendly, and very personable. God answered my prayers in finding a great dentist in my area. Patient, Suzanne H."- S.H. / Yelp / Jan 21, 2019
What to Expect
A root canal is usually performed with local anesthesia to numb the teeth and gums, and sedation may be added if needed. Dr. Fredericks will remove the pulp from the infected tooth/teeth, then she will place a crown or inject filling material. Some patients are at higher risk of developing an infection (usually those with heart problems like congenital defects and artificial heart valves), so Dr. Fredericks may prescribe a round of antibiotics before and after the root canal treatment.
If only local sedation is used, you will be able to drive and recover at home, but some sedation options may require you have a responsible adult pick you up. Patients will have temporary numbness and some may experience minor discomfort that can usually be treated with an over-the-counter painkiller. If a temporary crown was put over the tooth, the permanent crown will be placed and fitted during a separate appointment. After a root canal, oral care including brushing and flossing at home, plus visits to Southern Cal Smiles as recommended by Dr. Fredericks, are important to maintain the health of the treated tooth/teeth.
A root canal procedure is usually covered in part by dental insurance, but it may not cover additional expenses for emergency care. Southern Cal Smiles accepts many forms of payment and we can help patients with financing plans, if needed.
