Oral Hygiene Basics

Building Healthy Habits for a Lifetime

Oral hygiene

The Foundation of Good Oral Health

Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. It involves regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. By establishing good habits early and maintaining them throughout life, you can prevent most dental problems before they start.

Brushing Your Teeth

Brush your teeth at least twice a day — in the morning and before bed. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, short strokes. Don't forget to brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of all teeth, as well as your tongue.

Flossing Daily

Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gumline where your toothbrush can't reach. Floss at least once a day. Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most around your middle fingers. Gently guide the floss between teeth using a rubbing motion, and curve it into a C-shape against each tooth.

Regular Dental Visits

Visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and checkups. Regular visits allow Dr. Fredericks to detect problems early, when they are most treatable, and provide professional cleaning to remove tartar that brushing and flossing alone cannot remove.

Diet and Oral Health

What you eat affects your oral health. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which can erode enamel and promote decay. Choose tooth-friendly foods like cheese, yogurt, leafy greens, and crunchy fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
