About Nitrous Oxide
Sedation dentistry in Woodland Hills has many benefits for patients who have a fear of going to the dentist or are nervous about their procedure. The main benefit is that it helps patients relax and ease their anxiety. Sedation can also help patients feel as if time is going by more quickly, allowing the dentist to perform complex procedures in fewer appointments. Additionally, sedation can reduce the gag reflex so sensitive patients can have a more comfortable experience. One of the sedation methods used by cosmetic and general dentist Dr. Susan Fredericks is nitrous oxide gas. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedation technique in which you will inhale nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas.” It's important for you to be open and honest with Dr. Fredericks at Southern Cal Smiles about your general health and current medical conditions, so that she can choose appropriate medications for you. "If you want a personal dentist with a professional office personnel and the highest quality of care this is the place!! I have had dental nightmares in the past and it took me a while (even with insurance) to walk in an office. Dr. Susan STANDS BEHIND HER WORK, and the receptionist ALWAYS sends reminders including an email with a calendar interface for my Samsung phone. Accommodating schedules too!!! Open some Saturdays and late Wednesday night. As a person who travels for business...this is a HUGE plus! Higeinists are all caring (yes...learned the proper way to floss-yes THAT is a thing)...As long as I am in this area I will stick with this office of great people! Don't hesitate, just make an appointment!"- J.M. / Yelp / Jan 16, 2019

"Susan Fredericks has been my Dentist for years and I will never go to another Dentist again. She is super nice and caring and always takes her time to make sure I am comfortable. She even sees my kids (10 and 3) which is amazing because I wouldn't trust anyone else to see them. I tell everyone how great she is and if they ever want an amazing Dentist to come see her. We love you Dr. Fredericks!!!"- L.C. / Healthgrades / Oct 27, 2020
"Never had a cavity before, and Dr. Susan did it so gently and quickly - I must have only been in the chair for a total of 4 minutes because I only got through 1 song on my headphones. The dental hygienist, Anu is wonderful and patient and the Office Manager, Jackie is absolute gem! She is so, so helpful with any and all billing questions.Could not recommend Southern Cal Smiles enough!"- J.P. / Healthgrades / Oct 22, 2020
What to Expect
Oxygen is usually added to the nitrous oxide gas for safer results. Dr. Fredericks will begin the sedation by placing a hood over your nose as you breathe normally. You may begin to feel lightheaded within a few minutes as the nitrous oxide starts taking effect. You may then notice a tingling sensation (usually in the arms and legs) or a warm, vibrating feeling through the body. At full effect, the nitrous oxide gas may cause you to experience a sense of euphoria, allowing Dr. Fredericks to complete the procedure without any discomfort for you. The nitrous oxide can be used as long as necessary, and it can be switched on and off depending on your needs.
Once the nitrous oxide is stopped, the gas will leave your body in minutes. You should have no lasting effects and will be able to take yourself home after the procedure. There are usually no negative side effects associated with nitrous oxide gas when used for sedation, but some patients may experience slight nausea. To prevent nausea, you should eat a light meal before your procedure.
The insurance coverage of nitrous oxide sedation will vary depending on the reasons for use. When sedation is required for a certain procedure, it is usually covered in part by your insurance plan. If the nitrous oxide is requested by you for fear or anxiety, your insurance company may not cover the cost. Our front office will check with your insurance company to determine your coverage and personal expenses. Southern Cal Smiles accepts many forms of payment and can help connect you to medical financing plans.
