Straight, evenly spaced teeth are not only cosmetically appealing, but they are also good for your oral health. They are easier to brush and floss and more likely to maintain a proper bite. If your bite is thrown off, you may experience jaw pain, increased wear and tear on your teeth, and problems speaking or eating. Traditional orthodontia is effective yet conspicuous, so many adults and teens refuse braces because they don’t want others to see the metal brackets and wires in their mouths. Luckily, technological advancements have led to the development of clear teeth aligners, known as the Invisalign system. Invisalign is a safe medical device approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that invisibly improves the alignment and positioning of your teeth. Dr. Susan Fredericks works with Woodland Hills and Calabasas patients at Southern Cal Smiles to give them a beautiful smile with Invisalign. The removable aligners come in sets and resemble teeth whitening trays. They are comfortable, easy to wear, and very discreet. If you’re looking for a way to straighten your smile without earning the nickname “metal mouth,” schedule a consultation with cosmetic and general dentist Dr. Susan Fredericks at her office in Woodland Hills, CA to learn more about Invisalign.
What to Expect
If you and Dr. Fredericks decide that Invisalign is right for you, your treatment will start with digital x-rays and dental impressions that will be used to create your first set of teeth aligners. Dr. Fredericks will help you understand how to wear and care for your aligners, as well as when and how long you can remove them (Invisalign should be worn 20 – 22 hours per day). Most aligners will be worn for two weeks before you switch to a new set, but this can vary based on your progress and treatment plan. Dental visits should be scheduled about every six weeks to check the fit of the current aligners and take impressions for new trays. During your treatment, Dr. Fredericks will be able to give you a better estimate of how much longer you will be wearing Invisalign, but the average patient wears aligners for about one year.
Once your teeth are in proper alignment, it is important to use a Vivera retainer to maintain the results. This retainer does not need to be worn as many hours a day as Invisalign teeth aligners. Most patients only wear their retainer at night, but this will be determined by Dr. Fredericks. You should continue to visit Southern Cal Smiles twice a year for professional dental cleanings and exams and follow a good home oral care routine to keep your newly straightened teeth healthy.
The total cost of Invisalign will depend on the complexity of your case and how many different sets of aligners are created during the treatment period. Dental insurance may cover some of the cost of Invisalign, but this varies greatly depending on your insurance company and policy. Our front office can contact your insurance to calculate what will be covered and what will be billed directly to you. Southern Cal Smiles can also help make Invisalign more affordable through our payment options and financing plans.
