Dental Bonding Woodland Hills, CA

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure in which a tooth-colored composite resin material is applied to a tooth, sculpted into shape, hardened, and polished. It is called bonding because the material bonds to the tooth. Dental bonding is ideal for small cosmetic changes, for temporary correction of cosmetic defects, and for correction of teeth in areas of very low bite pressure.

Dental bonding is available at Southern Cal Smiles: Susan Fredericks, D.D.S, M.P.H. in Woodland Hills and the surrounding area. Call us at (818) 657-8055 to learn more about dental bonding and schedule a consultation.

What Can Dental Bonding Fix?

  • Repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Make teeth look longer
  • Change the shape of teeth
  • Protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

The Bonding Procedure

Little advance preparation is needed for dental bonding. Anesthesia is often not necessary unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth. The dentist will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of the tooth.

The surface of the tooth is roughened and a conditioning liquid is applied. These procedures help the bonding material adhere to the tooth. The tooth-colored resin is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape. An ultraviolet light or laser is used to harden the material. After the material is hardened, the dentist will further trim and shape it, then polish it to match the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface.

Advantages of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is among the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures. It can usually be done in one office visit unless several teeth are involved. Unlike veneers and crowns, which require custom fabrication in a lab, bonding can be done in a single visit. The procedure also requires the least amount of tooth enamel removal compared to veneers and crowns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long does dental bonding last?

A. Dental bonding typically lasts 3-10 years, depending on the location of the bonding, your bite, and your eating habits. It may need to be touched up or replaced over time.

Q. Does dental bonding require special care?

A. No special care is required. Simply follow good oral hygiene practices: brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and see your dentist for regular checkups. Avoid biting hard objects or using your teeth as tools.

Q. Can bonded teeth stain?

A. The composite resin used in bonding can stain over time, particularly from coffee, tea, tobacco, and red wine. Avoiding these substances and maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent staining.
