Patients with chipped, stained, or slightly misaligned teeth may benefit from dental veneers. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve appearance. They are bonded to the front of the teeth, changing their color, shape, size, or length.

Dental veneers are available at Southern Cal Smiles: Susan Fredericks, D.D.S, M.P.H. in Woodland Hills and the surrounding area. Call us at (818) 657-8055 to learn more about how veneers can transform your smile.

Types of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement.

What Problems Do Veneers Fix?

  • Teeth that are discolored from root canal treatment, stains, or excessive fluoride
  • Teeth that are worn down
  • Teeth that are chipped or broken
  • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped
  • Teeth with gaps between them

The Veneer Process

Getting a dental veneer usually requires three trips to the dentist: one for a consultation, one to make the veneers, and one to apply them. The process involves removing about half a millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, taking an impression, and then bonding the veneer to the tooth with a special cement.

Once the veneer is in the proper position, a special light beam is applied to activate chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating the bite, and making any necessary adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. Porcelain veneers typically last 10-15 years, while composite resin veneers last 5-7 years. With proper care, they may last even longer.

Q. Do veneers look natural?

A. Yes, modern porcelain veneers are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel. They reflect light similarly to natural teeth and are custom-colored to match your surrounding teeth.

Q. Can veneers stain?

A. Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining. However, the cement used to bond them can discolor over time. Maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding excessive staining substances helps preserve their appearance.
