Types of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement.

The Veneer Process

Getting a dental veneer usually requires three trips to the dentist: one for a consultation, one to make the veneers, and one to apply them. The process involves removing about half a millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, taking an impression, and then bonding the veneer to the tooth with a special cement.

Once the veneer is in the proper position, a special light beam is applied to activate chemicals in the cement, causing it to harden quickly. The final steps involve removing any excess cement, evaluating the bite, and making any necessary adjustments.
