About Dental Cleanings
An important part of keeping your smile healthy is scheduling a professional teeth cleaning twice a year at Southern Cal Smiles with general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Susan Fredericks. Teeth cleanings are recommended every six months for residents in Woodland Hills, Calabasas, and the surrounding areas of Southern California. Our team can professionally clean your teeth with special instruments to remove built-up plaque and tartar from the enamel and below the gumline. The teeth will then be polished to remove stains and brighten your smile. Dr. Fredericks can demonstrate proper brushing and flossing, so you and your family can develop a good home oral care routine to prevent problems and keep the mouth healthy. After the cleaning, fluoride treatments can be done for younger patients and those prone to cavities. If you are concerned about cavities, you can also talk to Dr. Fredericks about getting sealants on the back molars.
"If you want a personal dentist with a professional office personnel and the highest quality of care this is the place!! I have had dental nightmares in the past and it took me a while (even with insurance) to walk in an office. Dr. Susan STANDS BEHIND HER WORK, and the receptionist ALWAYS sends reminders including an email with a calendar interface for my Samsung phone. Accommodating schedules too!!! Open some Saturdays and late Wednesday night. As a person who travels for business...this is a HUGE plus! Higeinists are all caring (yes...learned the proper way to floss-yes THAT is a thing)...As long as I am in this area I will stick with this office of great people! Don't hesitate, just make an appointment!"- J.M. / Yelp / Jan 16, 2019

"My life has changed so much since I came to see Dr. Fredericks I smile so much. I never felt beautiful because my teeth were so distracting. My personality has also changed because now that I smile more, people smile back at me; it has been contagious. I laugh and enjoy living. I have changed my name to Sandy Beach and I will use that as my pen name as I am writing a book. When people meet me they laugh and smile when I tell them the name. Thank you Susan for giving me my confidence back."- S.B. / Healthgrades / Dec 15, 2019

"I have been a patient of Dr. Susan's for many many years and she has always taken great care of me. However, today she really impressed me when I came in for a tooth that I broke she examined the tooth, gums, and xray. She realized that I what I needed was a better Xray so she referred me to a root canal specialist in the building. He took the Xray and concluded that Susan was right and that I did indeed need a root canal. Susan Fredericks made sure I was seen the same day and that I got the necessary work done. She knows when she can do something and she also knows and is not afraid to admit when a certain procedure is best done by another dentist (specialist); and for that I have great respect and trust for her. Thank You Dr.Fredericks"- C.L. / Healthgrades / Dec 10, 2019
What to Expect
Dental cleanings are generally painless, but if you have sensitive teeth or gums, a topical numbing cream can be used. If you have trouble getting through a dental cleaning due to anxiety or a strong gag reflex, mild sedation options are also available. The cleaning may begin with an ultrasonic instrument that helps loosen plaque and tartar, then Dr. Fredericks will switch to fine hand tools (scalers and curettes) to carefully scale or scrape buildup from the gumline and enamel. Once the deposits are removed from the teeth, Dr. Fredericks can polish the teeth using a special tool and toothpaste. If needed, Dr. Fredericks can go over good home oral care routines to help you with your brushing and flossing technique for better checkups.
After the teeth are cleaned, Dr. Fredericks may perform an oral exam to check for signs of oral cancer and gum disease. To keep your teeth smooth and healthy, you should establish a home routine that includes brushing and flossing your teeth at least once a day. Dr. Fredericks may offer suggestions or instructions, like a special mouthwash or toothpaste to treat your specific concerns. You should schedule your next dental cleaning before leaving the office in six months' time or when Dr. Fredericks recommends you to return. Waiting too long between cleanings can lead to longer appointments and more invasive treatments.
Since a professional dental cleaning twice a year is considered a necessary preventative care procedure, most dental insurance carriers will cover 100% of the cost. Our office will check with your insurance company to determine their coverage before billing you directly. If you do not have dental insurance, please ask about our financing options.
