Tooth Extraction Woodland Hills, CA

A tooth extraction can be an essential part of maintaining one's dental health. Contrary to popular belief, wisdom teeth are not the only teeth that may need extraction. There are several reasons a dentist may recommend a tooth extraction, including overcrowding, infection, and damage beyond repair.

We understand that the prospect of having a tooth pulled can be daunting. Our team is here to make the process as comfortable as possible. Reasons for Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons why a dentist may recommend a tooth extraction. Some of the most common include:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease that has loosened the tooth
  • A tooth that is blocking other teeth from coming in
  • Teeth that need to be removed for orthodontic treatment
  • Fractured teeth that cannot be repaired
  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing problems

The Extraction Process

Before pulling the tooth, the dentist will give the patient an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. In some instances, a strong general anesthetic may be used. This will prevent pain throughout the body and make the patient sleep through the procedure.

If the tooth is impacted, the dentist will cut away gum and bone tissue that cover the tooth and then, using forceps, grasp the tooth and gently rock it back and forth to loosen it from the jaw bone and ligaments that hold it in place. Sometimes, a hard-to-pull tooth must be removed in pieces.

After the Extraction

Following an extraction, the dentist will send the patient home to recover. Recovery typically takes a few days. The following can help minimize discomfort, reduce the risk of infection, and speed recovery:

  • Take painkillers as prescribed
  • Bite firmly but gently on the gauze pad to reduce bleeding and allow a clot to form
  • Apply an ice bag to the affected area immediately after the procedure to keep down swelling
  • Relax for at least 24 hours after the extraction and limit activity for the next day or two
  • Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully for 24 hours after the extraction
  • After 24 hours, rinse with a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon salt and 8 ounces of warm water
  • Do not drink from a straw for the first 24 hours
  • Do not smoke, which can inhibit healing
  • Eat soft foods such as soup, pudding, yogurt, or applesauce the day after the extraction
